At DeWire Dental, you will have your dental implants placed by an experienced and qualified professional, supported by a courteous team of assistants. The first step in having any procedure done, though, is the basics. It is important to first understand what dental implants are. Here are some of the frequently asked questions about dental implants.
What Are Dental Implants?
Dental implants are artificial roots that are placed surgically into the jawbone.
How Many Types of Dental Implants Are There?
Two major types of dental implants exist. The first type are endosteal implants, usually the most common ones. These are fastened to the bone and resemble small screws. They will typically be made from body-safe materials like titanium. The second type is subperiosteal implants, normally placed on the bone. These are typically used when, after tooth extraction or loss, there is not enough healthy jawbone to support the endosteal implant.
How Do Dental Implants Work?
The main aim of the process of placing dental implants is to achieve good osseointegration. This is the functional connection that happens between the load-bearing implant, and the living bone. This is the process that then allows the implant to become rigidly fixed to the bone to enable it to withstand the constant pressure. This stability is affected by the volume and stability of the bone on which the implant is placed. The stability then allows the development of new bone fragments on the implant surface, which is the process referred to as osseointegration. Most dentists will end up using additional products including grafts, to help the process of bone integration.
What Are The Benefits of Having Dental Implants?
Dental implants are advantageous because they provide a predictable way to restore single and multiple teeth. It is a treatment that can very easily replicate the natural teeth of a patient, both functionally and in terms of aesthetics.
